Earned Value Calculator

Budget at Completion (BAC): the approved budget for the full project or work package.

Enter actual work accomplished, not the percentage scheduled to be complete.

How Earned Value Is Calculated

Earned Value (EV) = Budget at Completion (BAC) × (Actual Work Completed ÷ 100). Earned Value, also called Budgeted Cost of Work Performed (BCWP), expresses completed work in budgeted dollars. For a project with work packages of different budgets, sum the earned value of each package to calculate the overall EV.

Example

If your approved project budget is $100,000 and 60% of the work has actually been completed, EV = $100,000 × 0.60 = $60,000. This is the budgeted value of completed work—not necessarily the amount spent.

What Is the Difference Between Earned Value and Planned Value?

Earned Value (EV) measures budgeted work actually accomplished. Planned Value (PV) measures budgeted work scheduled to be accomplished by the reporting date. Comparing EV with PV helps assess schedule performance.

Does Earned Value Show If a Project Is Over Budget?

Not on its own. Compare EV with Actual Cost (AC) to assess cost performance. Cost Variance (CV) = EV − AC, while Schedule Variance (SV) = EV − PV.
