Calculate Budget Overrun

How Budget Overrun Is Calculated

Budget variance (%) = ((Actual Cost − Planned Budget) ÷ Planned Budget) × 100

A positive result means the project is over budget. A negative result means the project is under budget. Zero means actual costs match the planned budget.

Example

If your planned budget was $100,000 and actual cost was $110,000: ((110,000 − 100,000) ÷ 100,000) × 100 = 10% over budget.
