How Planned Value (PV) is Calculated

Planned Value (PV), sometimes called Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (BCWS), represents how much of the budgeted cost should have been spent based on your schedule as of today.

Formula: PV = Budget at Completion (BAC) × Planned % Complete

Example

If your total approved project budget (BAC) is $500,000 and you planned to be 30% complete by this point:
PV = 500,000 × 0.30 = $150,000.

That means according to plan, $150,000 of work should be completed by now.

Why PV matters

PV is a core part of Earned Value Management (EVM). You compare it to:

  • EV (Earned Value): What you’ve actually accomplished in dollar terms.
  • AC (Actual Cost): What you’ve actually spent.

This lets you calculate CPI, SPI, cost variance, schedule variance, and see if you’re behind schedule or over budget.
